Yayasan Gampopa Indonesia

Yayasan Gampopa Indonesia

Yayasan Gampopa Indonesia was established in 2018 by Lama Phurbu Tashi Rinpoche is to express, make accessible, and embody the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha. We provide a home for the study and practice of Buddhism, yet do not advocate one particular school of Buddhism.

Vision:

In a world where being secular is the norm and where many Buddhists are converting to other faiths, we aim to become one of the leading organizations outside India and Tibet for teaching the authentic Buddha Dharma and sustaining it for future generations. Our community of truth-seekers-laypersons and home leavers alike-are commited to escape the sufferings of samsara and attain true happiness through relentless focus on karmic purification and virtue accumulation by practising the proven methods as handed down by our lineage masters.

Mission:

In the short term, our mission is to build Mani Houses throughout the world in urban areas with considerable Buddhist enthusiasts.  These Dharma centers are a sanctuary for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn and practise Dharma, find spiritual refuge, gain practical skills, and make new friends. To maintain lineage purity, each Mani House appoints a qualified instructor for conducting Dharma classes.
For medium term, we will create retreat centers for serious practioners and home-leavers to practise higher-level Dharmas or methods requiring prolonged distancing from the mundane.  These retreat campuses are situated in locations far from population centers with plenty of open space to connect to nature, and are open to external communities in the same path in seeking authentic Dharma.
Over the long term, we wish to build Gampopa Institute, an institution of higher learnings for advanced students and sangha members.  This institute is the most practical means to create cadres of Dharma instructors fully qualified as teachers in public schools as well as lecturers in universities, being commited in spritual cultivation, proficient in the major languages of the scriptures and well versed in all traditions of Buddhism, This institute, once well established, is also a fitting forum for transmission of higher levels of Dharma by invited masters from the world over.
Lineage

Lineage

Yayasan Gampopa Indonesia draws on the teachings and practices of many realized figures across many different lineages and schools of thought. When it comes to dharma studies and activities, we consider ourselves as nonsectarian followers of Buddha, whereby we invite dharma teachers from all three major traditions of Buddhism to teach dharma in ways that preserve those different traditions. However, when we are doing more serious and specific dharma practices we follow Kadam masters and the Kagyu lineage of Vajrayana.
Our Yayasan is named after Gampopa Sonam Rinchen (1079-1153), the chief disciple of Milarepa, who studied under Marpa. Collectively, they were known as the three masters of Kagyu lineage.   Gampopa, a scholar, doctor, and tantric guru reknowned for the clarity of his teachings, established the foundation of Kagyu school as we know today, by synthesizing the monastic tradition and structured instructions of the Kadam practice with the oral teachings of Mahamudra.
Gampopa first studied as a Kadam monk for six years, practising the stages of the path (lamrin) in Kadam monastery. At the age of 32, he met the ascetic yogi, Milarepa, from whom he studied the Mahamudra teachings of the nature of mind and the Six Yogas of Naropa.
Prior to Gampopa, Mahamudra, like most tantric practices at the time, was largely undertaken by householder yogis practicing in remote places. Gampopa codified these ascetic teachings and founded the Dakhla Gampo Monastery as the first center for learning Kagyu methods in a structured, community-based monastic settings. His seminal work, The Jewel Ornament of Liberation, is the core text for Kagyu and the first lamrin written in Tibetan, being the source on which all later lamrin texts are based.
Gampopa, our namesake-lineage master, thus inspires our yayasan to have clarity in our intentions, to be systematic in our approach, and to built centers of learning to spread the authentic Dharma for liberation of all beings.
